A locally listed Victorian factory building on Belmont Row, once used as a Co-op furniture factory. It was to be demolished as part of the Ventureast development though there was fierce local opposition to the plan. However, in January 2007, the building was severely damaged in a suspected arson attack. The roof collapsed in and much of the internal structure was destroyed. Several days later, strong winds caused part of the front facade to collapse.

Despite the extent of the damage, the development partner selected by Birmingham City Council and Advantage West Midlands for the wider Eastside Locks development, Goodmans, submitted a full planning application for the reconstruction of the building with a modern extension to the rear to be used as a hotel. The plan was approved by Birmingham City Council who also committed money to the reconstruction of the facade of the Belmont Row Works.

As of 2011, work has not commenced on site and the building remains cautioned off and in a state of disrepair.

Comments

  • Apparently the building is listed and should definitely not be demolsihed
  • Strange how it was meant to be demolished and then burned...
