Highland Towers

 apartment, abandoned / shut down

Tugged in a serene hillside facing Kuala Lumpur city, Highland Towers is famous for the disastrous collapse of Block 1 in December 11, 1993 that claimed 48 innocent lives. The three 12 storey apartment blocks are located right next to a terraced hillside which is steep. Now, after its disaster in 1993, Highland Towers is a desolate place which is abandoned and has been reclaimed back by the jungle.

Blocks 2 and 3 still stand today but it is an eerie place and is rumoured to be haunted. There are plans to demolish the remaining two blocks in the future as it is structurally unsafe. Small trails connect the two towers and what used to be the ground floor carpark is now full with rubbish, earth and mud. Some people consider this place for photo shooting sessions and some even daringly went into the apartment blocks itself to explore the ruined rooms there. Drug addicts, too, take temporary shelter in this place of dismay and misery. It used to offer its residents scenic views over Kuala Lumpur.

The three blocks are identical, where each of the two towers in every block are connected to service elevators and stairwells. The swimming pool was located north of Block 2 and east of Block 3. Block 2 is constructed on a slightly higher slope between Blocks 1 and 3.
