Built in 1886, the “Fair & Square” factory was the first major commercial building in late 19th-century Washington Heights.


In 1892, an advertisement in Scribners Magazine read: “A Confidential Whisper. Buy Fair and Square Ribbon for Christmas fancy work; it makes a plain article elegant.” For this was the workshop of Joseph Loth & Company, a wholesale ribbon factory renowned across the country for its high-quality product. Built in 1886, the “Fair & Square” factory was the first major commercial building in late 19th-century Washington Heights. In its heyday, employed 600 workers and made ribbons in 15 widths and 200 colors.
