This glacier is located on the west of the Grimsel pass. Its surface is quite dirty compared to other glaciers in Valais. This is mainly caused by the frequent stone falls coming from the nearby mountains. Louis Agassiz studied this glacier in the 19th century. He had constructed a small "igloo" with stones on the glacier. Each year, Agassiz and his scientific fellows would climb on the glacier to study it. The "house" was still there but had moved, following the ice (see de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Louis_Agassiz)
