On July 11, 1970 an Athena rocket belonging to the US Air Force apparently lost control and missed its target hundreds of miles to the north, falling in this region. The rocket was carrying two small containers of Cobalt 57, a radioactive element. Immediately, a team of specialists arrived to find the fallen rocket. The aerial search extended over three weeks. Finally, when the rocket was found, a road was made to transport the wreckage, as well as a small amount of contaminated top soil.

The area is called a "silent zone" because of a myth which states that radio waves cannot be transmitted due to local magnetic fields.

Numerous visitors claim that compasses spin and radios stop working within the zone. The area does have a higher than normal magnetic field measurement.

Many other myths relating to the area arose as a result of the US Air Force recovery operations there, including:

* Inside the zone you cannot hear the conversations of other people
* The area is an UFO landing spot
* The area is a "pole" where earth energy is concentrated
