The Mary Murray

USA / New Jersey / South River /
shipwreck, destroyed, historical layer / disappeared object

An old Staten Island Ferry. Purchased in the 70's by a gentleman named George Searle. It was towed up the Raritan River to this location. It has not moved since, and has been left to rot on the tidal flats, clearly visible from the NJ Turnpike.

A permit from the State of New Jersey for the ferry expired in 2006, and the state is trying to have the owner remove it. Mr. Searle is finding this to be a major task, as the decaying vessel cannot be towed away as it is too structurally unsound. The boat cannot be scrapped in place either, as there is asbestos present. The cost for most methods of removal are more than a million dollars, which the owner and his family cannot afford.

The boat was eventually removed and scrapped in March 2008.
