The M3 was originally split here, with both sections connected by a bypass on the western side. The new M3 link was built via a cutting on the other side, which crossed Twyford Down (proving one of the most controversial roads ever built), while the old bypass was grassed over. The lack of congestion means that despite bisecting an area of special scientific interest, the new cutting has reduced pollution.
