The Calico Archeological Site is the location of an active archeological dig site which is open to the public. In 1963, the famous prehistorian Dr. Louis Leakey directed an excavation at the site, searching for evidence of early man in the new world. Thousands of stone tools and other artifacts have been discovered at the site in sediments whihc have been dated at more than 200,000 years old. Although this may represent the earliest evidence of man in the new world, interpration of the artifacts remains controvertial to this day.
