The ancient Ekachakra gramam mentioned in Mahabaratha is none other than Kothamangalam. It was famous from time immemorial for the trade between Pandion kingdom and Musris.It is believed that Aryan Brahmins were settled here in Kothamnagalam even in the 1st century AD.The royal route of Madura -Alwaye passes through Kothamangalam.
Due to the Pandian attack on this place , the population fled to adjacent places like Kodanad, Aymuri,Cheranallur etc. and Kothamangalam and the sub-urbs were left uninhabited for 2 centuries in the 8th and 9th centuries AD. The Thrikkariyoor temple near to Kothamangalam is declared as one of the 11 holy temples in Kerala.
St. Thomas is said to have preached in Kothamangalam and many brahmins embraced christianity including, cheladans, uppilappily,Edassery families in Kothamangalam. St. Thomas is believed to have stayed at Venpuram(Kothamangalam)enroute to Musris from Pandion kingdom.

Historians like V.Kanakasabha, Prof.Joseph Mundassery etc. believe that Kothamangalam was the capital of ancient Chera Kingdom (1st chera dynasty). However, the riddles are yet to be unfolded by appropriate archeological excavations in this area.
