Senamiestis (Kaunas)

Lithuania / Kauno / Kaunas
neighbourhood, interesting place, draw only border

It is the oldest part of Kaunas (its name literally meaning "The old town"), a part of Centro eldership. The growth of the city started here. This neighbourhood is situated in the confluation of two major Lithuanian rivers Nemunas and Neris. There is no notable industry here (the largest surviving building - a former shoe factory "Lituanica"), most of the buildings are historical, residential or cultural. The main street of the Old Town is Vilniaus street, entirely dedicated to pedestrians. Car traffic is limited within the Old Town, however, some major streets pass through and around it, for example, Šv.Gertrūdos, Birštono, Gimnazijos streets, Karaliaus Mindaugo avenue. Multiple bus and trolleybus service are provided and enable a traveller to reach any place within Kaunas with ease.
