Amida Buddha sect temple. Founded by Shinran Shonin (1173-1262). Betsuin (branch temple) of the Jodo Shinshu Hongwanji-ha denomination (Honzan - the Mother Temple - is in Kyoto).
In 1617, the temple was founded. Rebuilt on reclaimed land and then rebuilt again after the 1923 earthquake, using Indian architetural motifs, by Itoh Chuta, in 1931-1934.
