  • William Mead Homes is the name of the Housing Projects on North Main Street, but the neighborhood name of DOG TOWN goes back to the prior century, and plenty of newspaper articles testify to the name being in use for the neighborhood. The old Dog Town was centered on Cardinal Street which ran all across the L.A. river from around present day College Street, to Clover Street on the east side.

  • I was born at the county general hospital year 1951- I grew up in the william mead projects in the early 1950's till 1971. The people that were lived there at that time were hard working people. Mostley they all came from the south, they were part of a migration, mostley blacks mexican and a few native americans. Some were leaveing the south because jim crow was alive and well, The native americans were promise good jobs and such, but the bottom line was that the goverment wanted to take more of our land.I remember the 1968 or 1969 watt riots, And the only high building was city hall. There is lots of history in this area of los angeles. I can go on forever.

  • My uncle, aunt and cousin lived here after he came back from the Navy in 1947, in the old Dogtown housing. I remember visiting and playing here with my cousin Margaret, before they moved on. Years later, as a Boy Scout I came back with LAPD Troop 63X to deliver food and toys at Christmas.
