Proclamation of Independence Memorial (Bandar Melaka)

The memorial building was established in 1912. The building used to house the Malacca Club which was used as the social centre of the British people in British Malaya. The memorial was set up and officiated by former Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman on 31 August 1985, 38 years after the independence of the country.

  • I attended the Merdeka ceremony in Malacca in 1958. At the end of the day the Governor embarked in my ship, HMS St Brides Bay, and we took him to Singapore. I was in Malacca a few years ago, but I didn't know about this Memorial. Now, thanks to Wikimapia, I do know about it, and I shall visit it next time I come here.
