The 106th Rescue Wing is a member of the New York Air National Guard whose mission is combat search and rescue during times of conflict and search and rescue service to federal, commercial and civilian seafarers during peacetime. The unit is also designated as the official Space Shuttle rescue team by NASA.

The 106th Wing is also the oldest unit in the Air National Guard, with its origins dating to 1908 when its first members learned how to operate observation balloons. The unit has continually been involved in high-profile missions throughout its history, most recently in the 1991 'Perfect Storm', the 1996 crash of TWA Flight 800, the 1999 crash of JKF Jr's private plane and the response to the September 11th terrorist attacks.
