This is the home of the oldest Air National Guard unit in the U.S., the 102nd Rescue Squadron, which flew for the first time as a federal unit in 1916. The unit was highlighted in the book and movie, The Perfect Storm, by Sebastian Junger. His book told the story of TSgt. Rick Smith, a pararescueman who lost his life attempting to aid a Japanese sailor. The base was also involved in the 1996 crash of TWA Flight 800 and was were a helicopter crew witnessed the subsequent explosion of the 747.
