The congregation was established in 1838 to meet the religious needs of the local black community composed largely of escaped slaves from the United States, the church served as one of the last stops on the Underground Railroad. It was estimated that up to 400 black people were living in Amherestburg at that time. The building was completed in 1849 of barn farm construction, the church features a solid double door with a Gothic arched transom and three bays of Gothic windows.
