airport, international airport
What is now Buffalo Niagara International Airport was first created in 1926 when a group of aviation enthusiasts convinced City of Buffalo officials that an airport was an indispensable element for any city intent on industrial and commercial growth. Initially equipped with a large open grassland for its runways, the airport quickly expanded as air travel and aircraft dimensions grew. Serving as a major production, flight testing and evaluation site for the Curtiss-Wright Aircraft Company during the Second World War, the airport emerged in 1946 as a fully modernized aerial gateway.
In 1956 the Niagara Frontier Port Authority, a public body created by the New York State legislature, acquired the airport from the City of Buffalo, changing the name of the airport to The Greater Buffalo International Airport. The NFPA continued to operate the airport until it was assimilated into the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority (NFTA), itself created by the New York State Legislature in 1967. All subsequent operations at the airport to date are handled by the NFTA.
In September 1996 the NFTA board of commissioners changed the name of the airport to the Buffalo Niagara International Airport (BNIA) effective with the opening of a $57 Million dollar new passenger terminal and expansion of the airports crosswind runway and tarmac. Now averaging 110 daily flights with nonstop service to 23 airports, the Buffalo-Niagara International Airport regularly handles upwards of 5 Million passengers annually and has become a key regional gateway for Western New York, Northwestern Pennsylvania and the "Golden Horseshoe" of Ontario.
