Stephen A. Douglas Tomb (Chicago, Illinois)

USA / Illinois / Chicago / Chicago, Illinois / East 35th Street, 636
memorial, tomb(s), monument, NRHP - National Register of Historic Places, interesting place

One of my favorite Chicago ironies. On the edge of the city's overwhelmingly black Bronzeville area stands a grand and beautiful monument to the senator who became synonymous with the campaign to preserve the institution of Negro slavery.

Douglas is best remembered today for a series of political debates throughout the state of Illinois in 1858. In those debates, Douglas was trounced by Abraham Lincoln, a tall, ugly political upstart with a deathly hatred of slavery. Just a few years later, Lincoln was president and Douglas was urging loyalty to the Union cause, even as he sickened and died. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lincoln_Douglas_Debate
