USS Clamagore (SS-343)

USA / South Carolina / Mount Pleasant /
military, submarine, NRHP - National Register of Historic Places, historic landmark, United States Navy, museum ship

The Balao class submarine Clamagore is one of many fleet submarines built during World War II for the U.S. Navy. Clamagore was a typical fleet boat designed and constructed as part of a major program of submarine construction following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Though she arrived too late to serve in combat in World War II, Clamagore was modified in 1947 and again in 1962 into a FRAM II/GUPPY III submarine. The modifications to Clamagore included a snorkel and a lengthened pressure hull to accommodate updated sonars and fire control systems. One of only nine boats converted to a Guppy III configuration, she is the sole survivor of these vessels which for a time comprised the bulk of the United States submarine forces in the early Cold War.
