Amyklaaion and Sanctuary of Apollo
n today's hill of Agia Kyriaki is the famous temple of old - prodorikou - god of the region, Hyacinth and Apollo Amyklaios .
The Amyklaion flourish in almost all phases of the prehistoric period. The excavations revealed the existence of a settlement of the Middle Helladic period (2000-1600 BC ) on the hill . During the Mycenaean period (1600-1100 BC ) the position gets devotional character , as evidenced by the numerous figurines unearthed . From the Archaic to the Roman period , the Amyklaion an important political and religious center of Sparta . The important Spartan festival celebrated in Hyakinthia Amyklaion symbolizes the political reconciliation of Doric Sparta (Apollo ) with prodoriko population Amyklon ( Hyacinth ) .

First excavation of the sanctuary was the archaeologist Chr . Tsountas in 1889-90 , which revealed culvert embankment and the precincts of the temple. In south-west of the modern church of Agia Kyriaki excavated semicircular foundation with rectangular structure within which the Tsountas considered as the foundation of agalamtos of Apollo .
The excavation was continued in 1904 by A. Furtwaengler and architect E. Fiechter (1904), and in 1907 by A. Shade, who moved the church of Agia Kyriaki to complete the excavation and to liberate architectural throne . During the excavation was ascertained that the throne was under the church of Agia Kyriaki. The excavation was continued in 1924 by E. Buschor and W. von Massow and confirmed the use of space as a cult following since the Mycenaean era . Many architectural members from the " throne " of Bathycles acknowledged Identification and published by A. Delivorrias 1968.
