The Zanja Madre (the Mother Ditch), was the main source of water for Los Angeles during the 1800's. A waterwheel lifted water from the LA river into the zanja, that then flowed to the pubelo. This part of the brick pipe zanja (a later upgrade) was uncovered during construction for the Metro Gold Line.
