The dead trees of the Red Forest were so contaminated they needed to be buried safely or the radioactivity would sink into the soil and contaminate the water table. Burning was obviously not an option for the same reason.
Since they were basically high-level nuclear waste, the trees were bulldozed and buried in concrete-lined trenches topped with more concrete.
