Here the sanitary waste of Allegheny County accumulates in a 120-foot-deep wet well, awaiting treatment. The wastewater is pumped to a high point in the pump station and from there flows by gravity through the rest of the treatment plant. At only 616 feet above sea level, the floor of the Main Pump Station may be the "lowest accessible point in Allegheny County" according to an ALCOSAN publication.
