This monument marks the spot of Simon Newcomb's childhood home. Newcomb made several contributions to the fields of astronomy, math and physics. His interest and advances in the study of planetary motion helped him to attain the rank of Rear-Admiral in the United States Navy. He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
