A housing development built on the site of the former Long Grove Mental Hospital. Founded in 1903, the London County Asylum, Long Grove was the third mental asylum to be constructed on the Horton Estate. It was designed by George Thomas Hine FRIBA, Consulting Architect to the Commissioners in Lunacy an opened in June 1907.
Controversial for its role in incarcerating hundreds of sane typhoid carriers, some of whom developed mental health problems as a result of their institutionalisation, it closed in 1992 and was redeveloped as luxury apartments and housing. Only the administration block, villas, outer wards and part of the isolation hospital remain of the original buildings.
