Powai is a suburb of the city of Bombay, and is home to the Powai Lake(a reservoir), IIT Bombay, the Larsen & Toubro factories & offices, Hiranandani Gardens & Business Park, a layout of residential and commercial buidlings, respectively, that has become the second concentration of BPOs, KPOs, etc., and much more. The district is located on the junction of two range of hills along the western & eastern sides of Salsette Island. It suffers from transport problems due to the inadequacy of the roads to handle the traffic, and with the resultant vehicular pollution. This is worsened by the transit of vehicles bearing industrial raw materials & products to the Kurla-Chembur Industrial region to its south-east.

It is claimed that the area is also called "Pawai" (or even "Pavaee"). Incidentally, what is called Powai is actually several distinct villages, such as Tirandaz, etc., of which Powai is but one. If one goes strictly by history, the Powai lake reservoir and Powai district should be called Trinidade, as that was the last name of the village that now lies at the bottom of the reservoir.

  • Not sure what is happening, but apparently there is someone who is trying to rename 'Powai' to probably a marathi spelling or something? Friend, lets leave that to our politicians. If they change this name officially on the records, so would we update the annotation here.

  • Definitely, doodlums! At the same time its necessary to identify it correctly. We got to use the name as its officially recorded than going with what few of the localites believe. (I am one of the localites by the way!) This is specially important on pages like Wiki which gain its respect due to the fact, that with lots of people reviewing and making changes the description put in goes closer to the correct. This point will cease to exist if one of the maniacs (sorry dude!) keeps on reverting to the incorrect entries.

  • This place is verymuch develped now and a road is being constructed to join eastern highway and western highway, name of the road is Vikroli Jogeshwari link road.Opp. IIT there is a big colony developed known as HIRANANDANI GARDEN.Hope the road will be ready by mid 2008.

  • Look Bro, I have no personal enmity with you. Try to understand. I'm not trying to please any foreigner, for that sake. I'm as Indian as you are. It's just about having some more sensitivity on our part. Haven't the most memorable developments or events in here happened in the last fifty to seventy years; haven't generations together spent their lives in here, when the place was spelt 'Powai'? What happens to all the documentation that has been made possible with the advent of technology? And I'm not talking about just Government Records, it's way beyond just that. It's about the memories associated with a particular place, which is a part of the whole experience altogether. Renaming it with the so-called 'correct spelling'(sic) would account to fundamentalism, I believe. Think about it. And as far as my campus is concerned, it's the largest in Powai. No prizes for guessing which one.
  • I think you both are correct in marathi the place is called Powa"ee" the double "ee" signifies that its big "e" (I am not comfirtable with marathi typing so please try to understand) but that difference loses its meaning when it is translated in English. So the Powa"ee" (with a "dirgh e") becomes Powai I wonder if someone can write down alternative Marathi name in Indic script to this title Hope this is acceptable solution to all.
  • Friends, I think all of you have got some points, but why are we bothered about the spelling. In translating anything to english or hindi or anyother language there is many a times some disparity. I havn't yet spent a gud long time in Mumbai but I think the official spelling that is used by the Govt. and other institutions should be acceptable to others. Why are we worried about this. It is a long process to change the name.. n after all the change of names of B'lore, Calcutta n Madras to their respective official names is done by the politicians whom we(the citizen of India) have elected. So let them do the rest of the things related to stuffs like this. Me and you cannot do anything about it apart from just Talking at this moment. And by the way we have also got freedom of speech is also there.
  • As Sudarshan has mentioned, This place in Marathi is not called P"O"waee, it was / and is called P"Awaee. And no body has written about calling Newyork as Navyork or London as Lidan. Can we spell those cities like that. Will the Americans and the Brits tolerate it. Please write something about this. So let us call it as Pawaee.
  • This is how we Indians look at any situation. The real issue is that this place is made into an unlivable place by BMC, Builder, MMRDA, stone query combine. Highest polution level & 2nd highest density of population within Mumbai already with only 40% occupancy of the planned housing complexes. But lets correct the name first - shame on us.
  • As mentioned by a local resident of this place PAWAEE, many places in the city rather our country are made into an unlivable place by local municipal corporations etc. But please don't mix up those problems with the real name of the place. Why the local residents of the respective place talk to the political leaders. If you don't have the guts and courage to take openly your problems with your corporators or MLAs MPs, then don't grumble. Do you remember what Gabber Singh said, Jo dar gaya, samjo mar gaya. So please call it Pawaee and not Powai because of this place is made into an unlivable place by BMC, Builder, MMRDA, stone query combine.
  • Powai was areal beautiful place to live when I came here in 1954. Now due to mindless construcion activities most unplanned ways of working of MMRDA and other agencies it has become horrible, full of pollution, heavy unmanageable traffic.

  • Powai is a charming residential locale in the north-eastern part of Mumbai. The place is famous as home to IIT Mumbai, the premium technical education institute in India. Powai is 26 km north of downtown Mumbai. Powai and Vihar Lakes are the major attractions of Powai. Sanjay Gandhi National Park at Borivali and Tulsi Lake are other spots worth visiting around. Hotel Renaissance and Hotel Residence are two top end hotels nearby. Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport is 7 km south. Kanjurmarg Railway Station and Goregaon Railway Station serves Powai.
  • shantanu if someone change your mother as different will you accept it, i guess no same with the people who is part of this place and culture will not give up it's name. This all started when christian came and started this mess. converting all places and names by force, pity we still use the same record. This place had name and meaning before foreigners invaded and converted whole place by force. so respect the originality and any prick has problem with it. RIP
