Powai Lake is a reservoir built by the English by building a dam over a small local river Mithi. The reservoir was originally designed to supply water for a growing Bombay city, although it is no longer used to supply potable water, the water being used now solely to supply the Aarey Milk Colony's milch-cattle. What is now the lake's bed was originally an East Indian village called Trimurti. When the missionaries Antonio do Porto, Manoel Gomes and Joao de Goa (John of Goa) had finally succeeded in converting all the locals to Christianity in 1557, the village was renamed Trinidade (www.east-indians.net/Powai.htm), or Trinity in Portuguese. To build the reservoir, the English government purchased the village from the Catholic Archbishop of Bombay, and the Trinity Church was rebuilt in 1846 at a location on the South-East shores of the reservoir
On the South-West end of the reservoir is a popular picnic spot for junior schools. The reservoir is also used for rowing and for fishing by the Maharashtra State Angling Association.
Incidentally, what is called Powai is actually several distinct villages, such as Tirandaz, etc., of which Powai is but one. If one goes strictly by history, the reservoir should be called Trinidade, as that was the last name of the village that now lies at the bottom of the reservoir.
