This is currently open all seven days of the week. During at least part of the 1990s and before that, this was a Saturday market only. Saturday was the major market day. Most of what was exchanged was agricultural produce when it was a Saturday market. There have been occasions when the old regime (Derg) used this site for big public gatherings. Derg's revolutionary bands have also entertained the public here, the purpose being to reach out to the public and, on Saturdays, to rural inhabitants.

There are a couple of occasions also where the old regimes have used this site to execute people. These include hanging of a criminal during Haileselassie, and the public execution, by a notorious Derg cadre, of a young man in November 1978. In the latter case, the young man had made an unsuccessful attempt at an escape from the notorious Red Terror prison in the middle of the town.
