military, place with historical importance, fortification
Last remaining Civil War earthwork fortification of the four built around Cape Girardeau during the opening days of the Civil War.
The forts were arrayed from north to south in a semi-circle around the town. Fort A anchored the northern river approach. Forts B and C were to the Northwest and Suthwest.
Preserved by the American Legion after the war. The castle-like building in the center is not original and was built by the WPA in the 1930s.
