House of the late 18th century belonging to N. C. Volkonsky, grandfather of Leo Tolstoy, The writer put this building in his novel «War and Peace», as the house of the old Prince Volkonsky.

The building was reconstructed after the fire of 1812 in Empire Style and was reconstructed several times in the 19th century. Note the symmetrically placed gates and wings. The wrought iron balcony on the second floor and the wrought iron gates date from the late 19th century.

The domed rotunda on the corner actually belongs to another building which was constructed in 1907 by the architect P. Zarutsky.
