country house, Neoclassical (architecture), National Trust property (UK), Grade I Listed (UK)
One of the greatest Neo-classical buidings of the 18th century and certainly the most remarkable houses built in that style. Constructed for the Earl-Bishop of Derry and intended to contain his extensive collections. Having spent large amounts of time on the continent and especially in Italy the Earl-bishop amassed an important collection Italian paintings and sculptures and a significant assortment of classical antiquities.
The house was difficult to live in for it's size, layout and uncompromising Neoclassical style.
It is a Grade I listed building. The property is owned by National Trust, open to public.
