  • May 1973. Our maps did not show the "shortcut" we were taking and we wound up following dead end leads into tangles of mangrove. It was dark. The only thing to do was to retrace our path and try the next lead. By the time we got to Willy Willy it had to be 11:00 p.m. What a beautiful sight! If you've never been to the 'Glades you must imagine a canoe ride where there's no dry land. The water that floats your boat disappears into a thick jungle of roots that don't accomodate you. If you can't find the camp site then you are stuck in your canoe. Then you have mosquitos galore and some major reptiles, alligators!, to spoil your trip. A young man might prefer to paddle all night than to try to sleep without dry land. Bill pointed his flashlight at the campground and said, "Willy Willy". We were saved.
