One of the first military airfields completed during the WWII buildup, Annette Army Air Field was built on Tlingit land using ACOE and CCC labor. Its construction provided an early test of engineering techniques for airfield construction in high latitude muskeg environments. Designed to protect the panhandle and western Canada from attack, Annette was garrisoned by Royal Canadian Air Force squadrons which conducted anti-submarine patrols over the Gulf of Alaska and provided anti-aircraft battery support. Though active use was short-lived, the military maintained the facility until 1949.

The RCAF garrison was quartered to the south of the airfield.
