The basilica is located in the historic center of Fano (PU).
The church dedicated to St. Paterniano, the patron saint of the city of Fano, is late Renaissance style and is divided into structures and architectural elements sober and imposing. The exterior of the building was never completed with stone cladding and ornament of the façade was performed only portal of Michelangelo's derivation of the Venetian Jacopo Bambagiani (1573).
The bell tower was demolished in 1944 by the retreating Germans in 1952 and rebuilt on the same design.
