Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta (Fano)

The Cathedral is located in the historic center of Fano (PU) . This place must rise by at least half of the cathedral ' eighth century , in this period was in fact the transfer of the body from the church of San Fortunato him titled , located along the Via Flaminia .
The current cathedral was built in the XII century in Romanesque style , in place of an earlier church destroyed by fire in 1124 , which , being the main church of Fano , was called the Santa Maria Maggiore. The destruction of this primitive church is attested by a plaque on the inside of the church, under the walled organ : in it is reported that destroyed the old building by a fire , under Bishop Rainald (1136-1159) was built the new cathedral at the hands of master Rainerio ; it is assumed that the building was consecrated around 1140 .
The new structure was a three -nave ending with three apses, the crypt under the chancel . During the sixteenth century the two side apses were transformed into chapels , while the central apse was enlarged ; during the same period was destroyed the crypt and lowered the presbytery . The side chapels of the nave , built a total of eight in the fourteenth century , were reduced to six in the twentieth century , for the opening of two side entrances . The bell tower is a recent work , as the former was shot down by the Germans during World War II.
The presence of some Roman sculptures , along with other representatives deity , found in the episcopate , suggests a place which in Roman times to a sacred function , then occupied by a pagan temple.
