  • This place is also called Alankapuri. Alandhi means Aalam+dhathathi ≡ kshetram that fulfills all desires, material as well as spiritual. Sant Gnaneswar was born as the second son to Vittala Panth and Rukmini Bai in Aabe, near here, in 1296 A.D., (Saka 1197) Sravana Krishna Paksha Ashtami and Rohini star. He attained Jeeva samaadhi in Saka 1228 Margazhi Krishna Paksha Thrayodhasi on the banks of Indraayani at Alandhi. Although his Divine life was only for about 22 years, he awakened thousands of souls and established the Bakthi cult in the whole of Maharashtra. He lived as a friend to Pandharipura Vittala, a glorified form of Lord Krishna. He was respected as an avathaar of Vishnu. He could make a buffalo recite Vedas spotlessly like a scholar, and could ride on a mud wall that moved! Gnaneswar was initiated by his elder brother and Guru Sant Nivruthinath who was respected as an avathaar of Shiva. He had one younger brother named Shobaanadev (avathaar of Brahma) and sister Mukthaa bai (avathaar of Sakthi)
