The Fremont Tree in the Henry Cowell grove of Big Trees.

Lt. John Fremont is said to have camped inside this cavernous coast redwood (sequoia sempervirens) with his 100 men in the mid 1800s. The story may be hyperbole, but the tree was a famous site along the Santa Cruz-Los Gatos tourist train line, that was partly responsible for the founding of the first California State Park, Big Basin Redwoods, just a few miles away.

Ask a friendly docent at the visitor center - they'd be glad to tell you all the details of the fascinating history of this tree and this grove of 2000+ year-old trees
