monument, interesting place
The Ammerdown Monument is a 150 foot high structure on top of a hill 600 feet above sea level with various local names, the Ammerdown Park Column, Ammerdown Lighthouse or the Jolliffe Column. It was started in 1853 by Colonel John Jolliffe and is a memorial to his father Thomas Samuel Jolliffe, an MP who died in 1824. It was finished by his brother Rev. Thomas Robert Jolliffe.
It is a near replica of Eddystone Lighthouse with a glass dome or viewing lantern which could be illuminated.
Neither of these Jolliffes had heirs and the estate passed to Hylton family.
