Gish Abay (formerly known as Sekela) is a town, and the administrative center of Sekela woreda (district) in West Gojam. It's located some 31km (19mi) northeast of Tilili town which is situated along the main Gojam highway ("3"). The name Gish Abay has always been associated with the source of Gilgel Abay ("Little Abay") River, which is the principal contributor to the inflow of Lake Tana. As a result, Gilgel Abay is considered the ultimate source of Abay (Blue Nile).

The actual site of the stream-well is located a few step southwest of St. Michael's Church. Originating at Gish Abay, the Gilgel Abay flows north for about 200km (124mi) before emptying into Lake Tana on the southwest.
