The most famous cathedral in Mexico and the largest in the western hemisphere was constructed upon the ruins of an Aztec temple. Initial construction began in 1524 and an early church was completed in 1535. Construction of the present cathedral began around 1571 and a rededication occurred in 1657. Additional construction such as the addition of the bell towers continued until 1813.
