Located in the heart of Detroit's Cultural Center, the Science Center has long been a city icon and is architecturally one of its most dramatic buildings. Designed by William Kessler & Associates, the building was constructed in 1979 and with an addition added in 1991. The mission of The Michigan Science Center is to inspire Detroit area children and their families to discover and appreciate science, technology and engineering in a dynamic, fun learning environment.

The museum originally operated by the City of Detroit and known as the Detroit Science Center closed in September 2011, $10 million in debt. The center was reopened in December 2012 after donations, including donations from the Ford and Chrysler, enabled a new non-profit organization to purchase the building and exhibits. The name was changed to the Michigan Science Center at that time.
