Pelham has the distinction of being the site of the county’s first post office and is also the fountainhead of Elk River, an instrumental source for water in TVA's vast power system. Pelham is also known as the home of the Wilson-Allen walking horse line from which renowned world champion Tennessee walking horses have evolved. Pelham Elementary School is the local educational facility and there are numerous churches representing most religious faiths.
Local attractions include the Wonder Cave, which was discovered in 1897 by three Vanderbilt students, and a historical Confederate cemetery which serves as the final resting place for heroic ancestors of many valley families.
