HKM began in 1990 when Krupp and Mannesmann steel companies unified their separate Duisburg steel works into one location due to overcapacity in the industry. The site chosen was Huckingen, and Krupp closed it's Rheinhausen plant. HKM has a capacity of 5.2 million tonnes of crude steel per year.
