Sankarankoil is home to the famous Sankara Narayanan temple. It is situated at Tirunelveli District and 56km away from Thirinelveli City. Sankarankoil is second largest town in the district. Like every other temple Sankarankoil has its own interesting story. Once devotees of Lord Hari and Lord Shiva quarrel with each other to recognize whose god is powerful. Then Lord Shiva appeared as Sankaranarayanar to mark his devotees to understand that both Hari and Shiva are same. So it is held scared by saivites and Vaishnavites as wellThis temple depicts the concept of Hari and Haran being one God. This temple was built by Ukirapandiar who ruled this area in the early part of the 11th century A.D. It was his daily routine to go to Madurai on elephant's back to worship Lord Somasundarar and Meenakshi. On one particular day his elephant dug a pit with its trunk, fell and rolled over the earth, and refused to move further.
Manikreevan one of the king's watchmen rushed to him and informed about a Siva lingam and a Cobra coiling on it in Punnai forest. When the king came there to witness this an oracle was heard at that time which instructed the Pandiya king to construct a temple and worship him with utmost devotion which the king obliged. Ugra Pandyan constructed a temple and worshiped the deity.
Sankarankoil is also said to be home to a deity named Gomathi Ambal. Devotees believes that Sankarankoil‘s Nagasunai (sacred tank) have been dug by serpent kings named Paduman and Sangam which has a miraculous power to heal the ant-hill earth on the bodies whom bathe their. Annadhanam scheme is being conducted in the temple. Due to this scheme daily noon meals are being provided for 100 devotees.
