The High Commission in Canberra is a medium-sized mission with 19 Canada-based Staff (CBS), which includes seven CBS on exchange with various Australian government ministries, and 25 Locally Engaged Staff (LES). It is responsible for departmental program delivery in Australia, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Nauru, Palau, the Marshall Islands and the Federated States of Micronesia. Partner departments represented at the mission include Citizenship and Immigration Canada, Canada Border Services Agency, Privy Council Office and the Department of National Defence.
Diplomatic relations between Canada and Australia were formally established in 1939, with the exchange of high commissioners, just as World War II broke out.
The three-storey chancery was officially opened 30 January 1964 by Australian Prime Minister the Right Hon. Sir Robert Menzies. In 1994, the chancery was expanded with a two-storey wing at the rear of the building. The new extension was opened by the Hon. Raymond Chan, Canadian Secretary of State (Asia-Pacific), on 4 August 1994.
Since 1950 the High Commissioner's Official Residence has been the elegant mansion at 32 Mugga Way in Canberra's historic Red Hill Conservation Area.
Canada maintains a Consulate General in Sydney with six Canada-based staff and 34 local employees, and two Consulates with honorary consuls in Melbourne and Perth.
