Former port and shipping center during the Colonial period, site contained piers and warehouses for delivery and storage of goods transported by ship to this landing, thus the name of the site and Landing Road that traverses it. Ocean going and coastal transports could only proceed to this point since the Raritan River channel was much more shallow upstream. Several archeological excavations have been performed in this area.
