Vishudha SUNORO is there in this church. Soonoro means belt. The relic is of the belt worn by St mary.
The parish is about 1000 years old. It was an offshoot of either Edappally or Kanjoor parish. Almost all parishes in Kunnathunad Taluk are offshoots of this parish. The RC Church at Mudakkirai close by was founded by the prop Portuguese faction in the 17th century with assistance from mother parish, calculated pro rata.Vengoor Geevargese Kathanar who was Advisor to the Archdeacon who fought the Portuguese was Vicar here.Another all Malankara leader was P A Paulose Corepiscopa who was twice ominated as Clergy Trustee of the Church.Poykattil Abraham Malpan, a contemporary of Palakkunnathu Abraham Malapan who founded the Marthoma Church(grandfather of Metropolitan Barnabas of the Indian Ortodox faction) and his nephew Mathu Kathanar who represented the landed gentry of Kunnathunad taluk(today's MLA)in the Sree Moolam Assembly were also Vicars here.Athumkal Geevargese Corepiscopa, an early missionary to Malabar, and founder Gen Sec of EAE was also Vicar.All Patriarchs who visited Malankara visited this church.Elias III held the famousKURUPPAMPADI ASSOCIATION here when stalwatrts like KCMammen Mappila, EJJohn Vakil and RaoBahadur OMCherian were also delegates.
A member of this parish was a member of the Patriarchal delegation which declared economic communion with Pope John Paul II.The same person holds the highest decoration for laymen in the church viz. BAR ETO BRIRO.The only winner of Kerala Saitya Akademi award is from this parish.3 persons got into IAS and two of them retired at the level of Chief Secretary.The third, G ELIAS of Kallrakkal Tharakan family, is still in service although outside the state.The parish has about 10000 members.
