About Srimukhalingam Temple
Srimukhalingeswara Temple is a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located on the left banks of River Vamsadhara. Elegantly carved, this temple is a group of three temples dedicated to three forms of Lord Shiva namely, Mukhalingeswara, Bhimeswara and Someswara. The temple is built in Indo-Aryan style. To witness one of the marvellous sculptures, carvings and intricate architecture, one has to visit this temple. The architecture of the temple is so elegant that one just cannot move eyes from it. As you observe closely, you can see that every piece and corner of the temple is as excellent as the other.
At the entrance, which is a huge arched gate, you are welcomed by two lions on each side of the few stair-cases. The first gate takes you to the outer prakara have where there is you a Nandi in a mandapam. A more intricately carved gate with figures of Gods and Goddesses takes you to the inner prakara (compound wall) where stands one of the master pieces of those times, the temple of Mukhalingeswara. At every corner of the inner prakara, there are many small temples, some dedicated to Lord Shiva (in the form of Someshwara and Bhimeswara) and Lord Ganesha. As you enter the temple, in the inner compound, there are two temples dedicated to Lord Shiva, one at your right and the other at your left. In the centre stands the fantastic finely carved temple. The walls of the temple in the centre have images of Gods and Goddesses in their various avatar (forms). You can see images of Lord Shiva with His consort, some of them are forms of Lord Vishnu on them. Every image depicts a story from the Shiva Purana.

Not much is known about the history of the temple except that it was built by the Eastern Ganga Kings somewhere in 9th century AD.

Local info
Though there are small villages on the way from Srikakulam town, they don't have proper accommodation facilities. It is better to stay in Srikakulam and make a day's trip to the temple of Srimukhalingam.

Less one ,One crore Shiv ling available at Srimukhalingam.Excellent location it and near temple beside Vamsa dhara river available for before darshan Bath.This is small village, and not developped. but member of buses available from Srikakulam, Narasannapeta, and Palasa, Parlakimundi.   • ఉత్తరాంధ్ర విశ్వేశ్వరుడు శ్రీముఖలింగేశ్వరుని దేవాలయం శ్రీకాకుళం జిల్లా జలుమూరు మండలంలో ఉంది. ఈ గ్రామం మామిడి తోటలు, శోభాయమానంగా అగుపించే కొబ్బరి తోటలకు ఆలవాలం. దేవాలయ పరిసరాలలో ఉన్నంతసేపూ భగవంతునిపై భక్తిప్రవత్తులతోపాటు మనసుకు ఆహ్లాదం కలుగుతుంది. 'శ్రీముఖలింగం ' పేరులోనే చక్కని అర్ధం ఉంది. "పరమేశ్వరుడు లింగంలో కనిపించుట" అని దీని అర్ధం. ఈ దేవాలయంలోని శివలింగాన్ని ఏ దిశ నుంచి చూసినా మనవైపే చూస్తున్నట్టు ఉంటుంది. దేవాలయ గోపురం చాలా ఎత్తుగా ఉంటుంది. కాశీలో లింగం, గంగలో స్నానం, శ్రీశైలంలో శిబిరం, శ్రీముఖలింగంలో ముఖదర్శనం చేసుకుంటే మోక్షం సిద్ధిస్తుందని భక్తుల నమ్మకం. శ్రీముఖలింగేశ్వరుని ఆలయానికి పక్కనే ఆంజనేయస్వామి ఆలయం ఉంది. భక్తులు శ్రీముఖలింగేశ్వరుని దర్శించుకున్న తరువాత ఆంజనేయస్వామిని దర్శించుకోవడం ఇక్కడి ఆనవాయితీ. శ్రీముఖలింగేశ్వరంలో మూడుచేట్ల ముక్కోణపు ఆకారంలో మూడు ఆలయాలు ఉన్నాయి. వాటిలో ప్రధాన ఆలయం మధుకేశ్వర ఆలయం. ప్రస్తుతం ఆర్కియాలజీ డిపార్ట్‌మెంట్ వారు మధుకేశ్వర ఆలయం చుట్టూ సుందరమైన క్యూ కాంప్లెక్స్, పచ్చని మొక్కలతో సుందరమైన పార్కు ఏర్పాటు చేస్తున్నారు. దీనికి అభిముఖంగా కొంత దూరంలో భీమేశ్వర ఆలయం ఉంది. ఈ రెండు ఆలయాలకు కాస్త దూరంగా ఊరి ప్రధమార్ధంలో అధునాతన వాస్తు పద్దతిలో అద్భుత సోయగాలు కురిపిస్తూ సోమేశ్వర ఆలయం భక్తులకు ఆహ్వానం పలుకుతున్నటుగా ఉంటుంది. ఇందులో ప్రతిష్టితమైన లింగాన్ని శ్రీముఖలింగేశ్వరుడు అంటారు. ఈ ఆలయంపై సుమారు 100 సంవత్సరముల క్రిందట పిడుగు పడింది. పిడుగు పడినప్పుడు ఆలయ శిఖరం దెబ్బతినగా దానిని ఆర్కియాలజీ డిపార్ట్‌మెంట్ ఆఫ్ ఇండియా వారు పునరుద్ధరించారు. ప్రస్తుతం ఈ మూడు ఆలయాల్లోనూ శిల్ప కళాసంపద చూపరులకు కనువిందు చేస్తుంది. ఈ ఆలయం చాణుక్య శిల్పకళా వైభవానికి దర్పణం పడుతుంది. ఈ ఆలయాలు క్రీ.శ. 573-1058 సంవత్సరాల మధ్య కాలంలో నిర్మించారని చరిత్రకారులు చెపుతుంటారు. శ్రీముఖలింగేశ్వరునిపై స్థానిక కథనం శ్రీముఖలింగేశ్వరుని గురించి చాలా కథలు ప్రచారంలో ఉన్నాయి. పూర్వం ఒక కుమ్మరి కుటుంబానికి సంతానం కలుగకపోవడంతో ఆ దంపతులు చాలా బాధపడేవారు. సంతానప్రాప్తికి కోరుతూ ప్రతిరోజూ శ్రీముఖలింగేశ్వరుని దర్శించుకుని తమ విన్నపాన్ని వినిపించేవారు. తమకు సంతానం కలిగితే దేవుడికి పెద్ద గోలెం (తొట్టె) చేయిస్తామని మొక్కుకున్నారు. దేవుని కరుణాకటాక్షాల మూలంగా వాళ్ళకి ఒక కుమారుడు జన్మించాడు. ఆ దంపతుల ఆనందానికి అవధులు లేకుండా పోయాయి. తమకు సంతాన భాగ్యాన్ని కలుగజేసిన పరమేశ్వరుడికి మొక్కు తీర్చు కోవాలని భావించారు. వెంటనే పెద్ద గోలెం చేయించి గుడికి తీసుకు వెళ్ళారు. అది పెద్దది కావడంతో గుడి ద్వారంలో నుంచి లోపలికి తీసుకుపోవడానికి ఆస్కారం లేకపోయింది. దీంతో ఆ దంపతులు ఎంతో వేదనకు గురయ్యారు. తమ మొక్కుబడిని పరమేశ్వరుడు కావాలని తిరస్కరించినట్టుగా భావించిన ఆ దంపతులు తల్లడిల్లిపోయారు. ఎంతో కష్టపడి దేవునికి చేసిన గోలెం గర్భగుడిలోకి ప్రవేశించనపుడు ఆ పరమేశ్వరుడు ప్రసాదించిన బిడ్డను తాము స్వీకరించజాలమని భీష్మించుకున్నారు. ఈ సమస్యకు పరిష్కారం చూపే బాధ్యతను ఆ పరమాత్ముడిపైనే వేసి ఆ దంపతులిద్దరూ గోలెంలో ఆ బిడ్డని ఉంచి దేవాలయ ప్రధాన ద్వారం దగ్గరే దిగాలుగా కూర్చున్నారు. పడమటి కొండల్లోకి సూర్యుడు చేరుకున్నా దంపతులు మాత్రం పట్టు వీడలేదు. రాత్రంతా ఆలయం ముందు అలాగే కూర్చున్నారు. అయితే శ్రీముఖలింగేశ్వరుని కరుణ వలన ఇరుకుగా ఉండే దేవాలయ ముఖద్వారం ఎవరూ గమనించని ఆ రాత్రి వేళ కొంచెం విప్పారి ఎవరి ప్రయత్నం లేకుండానే గోలెం గుడిలో ఉన్న శివలింగం వెనుకకు వెళ్ళి కుదురుకుంది. తెల్లవారి మెలకువ వచ్చిన తరువాత వారందరూ ఈ వింతను చూసి ఆశ్చర్యపోయారు. ఇప్పటికి ఆ గోలెం దేవాలయంలో ఉన్నది. దీనిలో ఎప్పుడూ బియ్యం వేసి ఉంటారు. అక్కడ ఎప్పుడూ అన్నదానానికి లోటు ఉండదనడానికి ఇది సంకేతం. చారిత్రక కథనం చాణుక్య రాజుల అనంతరం ఆంధ్రదేశాన్ని పాలించిన రాజవంశీయులు ఈ దేవాలయాన్ని కొన్ని సంవత్సరాలు సున్నంతో కప్పి ఉంచారు. వారి తదనంతరం వచ్చిన ఒరిస్సా గజపతి రాజులు ఆలయానికి పూర్వ వైభవం తెచ్చారు. గజపతి రాజులు కొన్ని వందల ఎకరల భూమిని భగవంతుని అర్చన కోసం దానం చేసారు. ప్రతి సంవత్సరం శివరాత్రి నాడు జరిగే లింగోద్భవ కార్యక్రమానికి పర్లాకిమిడి గజపతి మహారాజు శ్రీముఖలింగం వచ్చి శ్రీముఖలింగేశ్వరునికి పట్టు వస్త్రాలు, ఆభరణాలు, తలంబ్రాలు బియ్యం సమర్పించు కుంటారు. ఈ ఆనవాయితే ఇప్పటికీ కొనసాగుతోంది. ఈ దేవాలయ సందర్శన విషయంలో జాతి, మత, కుల బేధాలు పాటించరని స్థానికులు చెపుతారు. అన్ని మతాలవారు శ్రీముఖలింగేశ్వరుని దర్శించుకోవడం అదృష్టంగా భావిస్తారు. పూజలు-సేవలు మహాశివరాత్రి పర్వదినాన శ్రీముఖలింగేశ్వరునికి పూజలు ఘనంగా చేస్తారు. ఆ గ్రామంలో మహాశివరాత్రి ఉత్సవాలను 9 రోజులపాటు వైభవోపేతంగా నిర్వహిస్తారు. సుదూర గ్రామాలు, పక్కనున్న ఒరిస్సా రాష్ట్రంలోని పలు గ్రామాల నుంచి పెద్ద సంఖ్యలో వచ్చిన భక్తులు శివరాత్రి ముందురోజే శ్రీముఖలింగం చేరుకొని తొమ్మిది రోజులూ దేవుని దర్శించుకుని తిరునాళ్ళలో పాల్గొంటారు. శ్రీముఖలింగంలో ఆలయాలను దర్శించుకున్న భక్తులు సమీపంలో చూడవలసిన ప్రదేశం శ్రీముఖలింగానికి 8 కిలోమీటర్ల దూరంలోని గొట్ట అనే గ్రామం వద్ద వంశధార నదిపై బ్యారేజి నిర్మించారు. దీనినే "గొట్టబ్యారేజీ" అంటారు. ఈ బ్యారేజీలో నీరు ఎక్కువైతే దిగువ ప్రాంతాలకు వదులుతారు. దీనివలన నది ఒడ్డున ఉన్న గ్రామాలు ముంపుకు గురయ్యే ప్రమాదం ఉంది.దీనిని నివారించడానికి ప్రభుత్వం బ్యారేజీకి రెండు కిలోమీటర్లు దూరంలో విశాలమైన ప్రదేశంలో నీటిని నిల్వ ఉంచుటకు రిజర్వాయర్‌ను నిర్మిస్తోంది. దీనివల్ల శ్రీకాకుళం జిల్లా వాసులు నీటికి ఇబ్బంది పడకుండా సస్యశ్యామలంగా వంటలు పండించుకునే అవకాశం కలుగుతుంది. ఈ క్షేత్రాన్ని దర్శించుకోవడమెలా? ముందుగా శ్రీకాకుళం చేరుకోవాలి. శ్రీకాకుళం బస్ కాంప్లెక్స్ నుంచి ప్రతి గంటకు బస్సు ఉంటుంది. కొన్ని బస్సులు హీరమండలం సమీపంలోని గొట్ట బ్యారేజీ మీదుగా వెళ్తాయి. నరసన్నపేట మీదుగా కూడా వెళ్ళవచ్చు.   • The temple has good archeological value and worth seeing. Going to temple involves tedious journey. Easiest and time saving way to go to this temple from Vizag is to board a bus going towards Pathapatnam, get down at Challapalli and take a service auto from there to Sri Mukhalingam, 15 KM away.
