The first two private sector operated wind power generation plants in Sri Lanka will be commissioned soon at Mampuri and Mullipuram in the Puttalam district, Sustainable Energy Authority sources said.

The Mullipuram plant will produce 20 mw to the national grid with 25 turbines working while the Mampuri generator will add 20 more mw with eight turbines.

Even though during the first eight years the consumers have to pay for one electricity unit more than for the diesel electricity unit because of the high cost of the turbines the rate would be reduced later.

Within the first eight years the investors will be able to recover the invested money, they said.

The first wind power plant in the country was built at Hambantota which generates three mw.
