Built in 1961 as the SS African Neptune for Farrell Lines and operating in the commercial trades until 1980 when she was turned over to MARAD for a newbuild, the former African Neptune was renamed the SS Cape Archway in April 1980. Entering the RRF (Ready Reserve Fleet) as one of the Military Sealift Command's Modular Cargo Delivery System Ships, the Archway was layberthed in the James River Reserve Fleet where she remained through 1990. Activated in support of US Forces during the First Gulf War, the Archway operated for two years transporting supplies to the Persian Gulf before returning to the Reserve Fleet in August 1992.
Downgraded from the Ready Reserve Fleet in July 2003, she is now slated for disposal through either scrapping or use as a target ship.
